1876: The ladies of Fort Lincoln put on a “leap year hop,” at the cavalry barracks.
1884: Sad news from Washburn arrived in Bismarck. After a snow storm hit the area, two herders, Merry and a Jewish refugee, were feared to be dead and buried in the snow.
1890: After being arrested by Sheriff Bartlett, Henry L. Ode vanished from custody. Ode had plead guilty to “obtaining money under false pretenses,” and was being transported to Whapeton, where he would be jailed. After stopping in Rutland, where the sheriff “was putting out his team,” Ode disappeared.
1928: Billy “Fargo Express” Petrolle, of Fargo, scored a knockout, in the fourth round, against Rusty Jones, of Kansas City. A solid right to the jaw of Jones, heard throughout the house, finished the bout.
1948: Eight landowners were awarded $22,977 for 2,300 acres of land that was needed for the Garrison Dam. The landowners had initially wanted $64,230 for the land that the government valued at $18,675.
